Board of Directors

Although Welch Allyn remains family-owned, the company is governed by a board of directors who provide oversight and direction to the overall strategic and operating performance of the company.

Eric Allyn

Eric Allyn has spent most of his career working at Welch Allyn, beginning with his first summer job in 1982.  He has held various executive roles in International Business Development, International and US Marketing, US Specialty Sales, Japan and UK Country Management, and SBU Management, as well as numerous other positions within Welch Allyn's Skaneateles facilities.  Most recently, Eric was the Interim Managing Director of the Allyn Family Office.  Eric has lived overseas for five years, including two years with Welch Allyn in the UK, and three years in France and Switzerland as both a student and a teacher.

Eric is a 1986 graduate of Dartmouth College and earned an MBA from The Darden School at the University of Virginia in 1990.

Robert (Bob) J. Bennett

Robert (Bob) J. Bennett has been a member of the Welch Allyn board of directors since 1999.

He has served in various executive and board capacities with responsibilities for mergers, acquisitions and integration of more than seventy banks. Additional experience includes international management consulting, information systems marketing, and industrial financial management. Bob was chairman of M&T Bank, prior to his retirement in 2000 and remains on the board of directors there. In addition, he is a member of the board of directors for both Farmers & Traders Life Insurance Company and Hand Held Products, Inc.

Mr. Bennett is a graduate of Babson College, holds a M.B.A. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management program.

Larry Buckelew

Larry Buckelew, former president and CEO of Gambro Healthcare, Inc, has more than 30 years experience in the healthcare industry. He began his career with American Hospital Supply Corporation (AHSC) and served as an Executive with American and later Baxter International Inc. following their merger. Formerly the president of Teleflex Medical Group and COO of Sunrise Medical, Inc., Buckelew has ample leadership experience, including serving on a variety of boards: Cymed, Inc., Gambro, Inc., Sunrise Medical, Inc., Surgical Services and Weck Closure Systems. Currently, Mr. Buckelew serves as a Corporate Director for Alliance Healthcare Services and LaVie Care Centers, and serves as an advisor to Warburg Pincus, LLC.

James Crook Jr., Chair

James Crook, Jr. was the CEO of IDX Systems Corporation, a healthcare software and services company that provides products for healthcare practitioners to automate financial, administrative and patient access operations, before IDX was acquired by General Electric in 2006.  He started his career with IBM prior to working 25-years with IDX in a number of executive operating roles.  Crook serves as an advisor to the Accel-KKR board of directors and is active on several non-profit and not-for-profit boards, including Volunteers in Medicine, Champlain College and Development Associates International.

Yvonne Curl

Yvonne Curl is the former chief marketing officer for Avaya, Inc., a communications corporation headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J.  Previously, she worked in a variety of capacities at Xerox Corporation, leaving as the senior vice president and general manager of the Public Sector Worldwide.  Additionally, Curl's service on the HealthSouth board of directors since 2004, has given her an accelerated education on the delivery side of healthcare, which complements her extensive business experience.  She also serves on the Charming Shoppes and Nationwide boards.

Tasha Allyn Given

Tasha Allyn Given was named to the Welch Allyn board of drectors in 2005, one of three directors from the Allyn family.

Tasha has a B.A. degree from Colby College.

Julie A. Shimer, Ph. D.

Julie Shimer, Ph.D., is chief executive officer and president of Welch Allyn, a privately-held, manufacturer of frontline medical equipment and diagnostic solutions headquartered in Skaneateles Falls, New York. Shimer joined the Welch Allyn family in 2002 as a member of the board of directors, bringing with her over 20 years of leadership experience in the computer networking and wireless communications industries. Shimer’s business expertise and exceptional grasp of technology proved to be an invaluable asset to the company, earning her the title of president and CEO in 2007 – becoming the first woman to hold this post in the 95-year history of the company. In her first two years at the company, Welch Allyn won “Best Places to Work™” accolades in Ireland and Mexico, began developing an innovative new platform of connected devices, and broke ground on a $30 million expansion project at its global headquarters in Skaneateles Falls.

Most recently, Shimer served as president and CEO of Vocera Communications, a leading wireless communications company based in Cupertino, Calif.  While at Vocera, she led the company in securing more than $29 million in capital funding, shipped the first Vocera Communications Systems, and added key talent to the executive, marketing, and technical teams. As a result of her leadership, the company experienced explosive growth; and its communication system was deployed in leading hospitals in the United States and Europe.

Shimer also held executive positions at 3Com Corporation, serving as vice president and general manager of its networking products. Before joining 3Com, she held executive positions at Motorola, where she was vice president and general manager in the paging division and, prior to that post, vice president in its semiconductor products sector. Shimer also held leadership positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories and Bethlehem Steel Company. Along the way, Shimer was issued a US patent and authored more than 10 technical papers.

Shimer currently holds board positions with Welch Allyn, Netgear and CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity. She is actively involved in programs that encourage women to enter engineering fields and is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Society for Women Engineers.

Dr. Shimer holds master’s and doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University and a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 

She resides in Skaneateles, NY with her husband, Jary.

Peer Allyn Soderberg, M.D.

Peer Allyn Soderberg, M.D., has been a member of the Welch Allyn board of directors since 2005 and is one of three Allyn family members on the board. He is medical director of Jordan/Elbridge and Marcellus Volunteer Emergency Services.

Peer earned his B.S. degree at Washington and Lee University and his M.D. at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  He completed his residency at the St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center and is board-certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Barry Wilson

Barry W. Wilson is an international executive with 40+ years of experience in both the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.  He has served as President of Medtronic International, President of Lederle International, prior to its merger with Wyeth, and President of Bristol Myers Squibb Europe. He had nine international assignments with Pfizer. Mr. Wilson is currently Chairman of Heartscape Technologies and serves on the Board of Directors of Atani Pharma, NextPharma Technologies, Anecova and The Rezidor Hotel Group. He also advises several Private Equity and Venture Capital organisations.

Greg Norden

With a background in finance, Greg Norden has more than 20 years of experience as a senior executive in the global healthcare and pharmaceutical industries. Prior to Pfizer’s acquisition in 2009, Norden served as the senior vice president and chief financial officer of Wyeth (formerly American Home Products Corporation). Before joining Wyeth, Norden worked in audit management at Arthur Anderson & Co., where he managed major audits for top corporations. Currently, Norden is on the board of directors of Human Genome Sciences, a leading biopharmaceutical company.  

Craig B. Reynolds

Reynolds has more than 30 years of leadership experience in healthcare companies. He is formally the chief operating officer and director of Respironics, Inc., a pre-eminent maker of medical devices for sleep apnea diagnosis and treatment. After the company was acquired by Koninklijke Philips Electronics in 2008, Reynolds served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Home Healthcare Solutions business of the company. In addition, Reynolds held many positions during his seventeen-year career at Healthdyne Technologies, Inc., including president and chief executive officer. Currently, Reynolds is the chairman of the board of directors of Symmetry Medical, Inc.
